I have
never liked chocolate...EVER! From the time I was born, it was a negative thing in my life. The first time my mom realized this, I was six weeks old. She was nursing me and had eaten a few M&M's earlier. For the rest of the day, I was colicky. When I was two, people would tell my mom to have me try it. She never forced me, but one day, she did try to give me white chocolate to see if I would eat it if it looked different. I was not tricked, and I refused to eat it.

As soon as I tell people I don’t like chocolate, the questions start coming. “Are you allergic, or do you just not like it?” “Do you eat any chocolate?” “What about chocolate cake? Or hot chocolate? M&M’s? etc.” My answers are always the same: “I just don’t like it. I will eat white chocolate. I don’t eat any kind of milk or dark chocolate, no matter the form it is in.”

I eat white chocolate (no cocoa), and in the last several years, many candy companies have started making white chocolate versions of their candy...Reese's, Kit Kat (sort of), Toblerone, Dove, etc. As soon as these candies are available in white chocolate, I buy them and try them out. Usually, I am shocked at how rich chocolate can be, and only eat a little bit at a time. I was so excited last Christmas, when for the first time M&M's came out with White Chocolate/Peppermint M&M's. For the first time in my life, I purposely ate, and even enjoyed an M&M! That was an exciting day for me. :) Since then, I have had plain White Chocolate M&M's and recently discovered Candy Corn flavored M&M's. All are very good, but I don't normally eat many at a time...until tonight.
In the last several years, I have started wondering if maybe I am allergic to chocolate, and learned at an age early that it makes me sick. Several people on one side of my family either don't like it or are allergic, so it isn't too far-fetched. And after tonight, I think it's even likely. I probably ate a few too many Candy Corn M&M's and definitely didn't feel well after. When that happened the second time in the same evening, I realized my claim of "mentally allergic" may really be "physically allergic." I will probably continue eating my random white chocolate candies, but maybe I should keep it to small quantities.
